A Croatian Odyssey: Exploring Its History and Coastlines
Where do you go after you’ve been a Roman emperor? Croatia! Croatia is a goldmine for history buffs, with the added benefit of an incredibly beautiful coastline with amazing beaches. What more could you want?
Uncommon Odysseys is excited to offer a unique summer program in Croatia during the summer of 2027. Participants will travel as a group with an experienced teacher, a graduate student, and local guides to many different areas while learning about all the culture, history, cuisine, archaeology, architecture, geology, and so much more this beautiful country has to offer.
Our journey begins in Dubrovnik where participants will spend the first day exploring the shops and cafes. Tour the old town of this Gothic-Renaissance walled city.
Next we head to Ston to walk its massive 14th-century defensive walls (the longest fortress system in Europe outside of Scotland). Witness one of the most extraordinary archaeological finds of the 20th century, The Augusteum of Narona.
Then we continue on to Salona, the largest archaeological park in Croatia & Split to spend 2 days/nights visiting the Split Archaeological Museum, which houses the finest sarcophagi and inscriptions found at Salona as well as a visit to Diocletian’s palace and so much more.
Then we venture inland to Burnum to see Krka National Park, the headquarters of the Roman XI Legion Claudia Pia Fidelis and Asseria, a heavily underrated, untamed archaeological site. Next we arrive in Zadar, which Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus fortified with massive stone walls, and enjoy the Sea Organ and other highlights.
The next day we spend the morning at Colonia Iulia Iader in Zadar on a guided tour seeing the Roman forum, the Nymphaeum, and the Zadar Archaeological Museum. After spending the night in Pula, we explore Pula Arena and The Forum Complex. You will have a free afternoon to hunt down the Punishment of Dirce, a stunningly detailed 3rd-century Roman floor mosaic tucked away in a random courtyard near the church of St. Maria Formosa or just explore more of Pula.
For our final day, we take a short 15-minute ferry from nearby Fažana to the Brijuni National Park island chain. Here you can walk the kilometer-long route or rent a bicycle to explore the sprawling ruins of The Maritime Villa of Verige Bay, a 1st-century BC Roman summer villa complex that sits right at the water's edge.
